Floors are Renewed!

One of the main reasons we chose to buy an apartment in a tenement house, is because of the floors! They’re old but under all that awful paint there is a beautiful healthy wood! The look is expensive, but the reality is that its actually cheaper to have it renewed than to buy new wooden panels at Castorama, Leroy Merlin or wherever you prefer. It cost us 55zl per square meter!

Una de las razones porque decidimos comprar un departamento en un edificio muy viejo fue por sus pisos! Son viejos, pero debajo de esa pintura horrorosa, hay una madera sana y hermosa! El resultado da la impresión que fue costoso, pero la realidad es que costó menos de lo que te cuesta comprar pisos en Sodimac, Ace Home Center o alguna tienda así. Solo 55zl por metro cuadrado (45 soles o 17 dólares)!

Jednym z głównych powodów wybraliśmy na zakup mieszkania w kamienicy, jest ze względu na podłogi! Są one stare ale pod farba,  jest piękne drewno zdrowe! Wygląd jest drogie, ale jest taniej niż kupić nowe panele drewniane w Castoramie, Leroy Merlin lub OBI. To kosztowało nas 55zl za metr kwadratowy!

So here’s how it went:

First we had to remove some wooden sheets that where covering the floor.

Primero tuvimos que quitar esas laminas de madera (nordex o trupan).

Najpierw musieliśmy usunąć niektóre drewniane arkusze, że w przypadku, gdy pokrycie podłogi.

     

Then the removal of all the dark reddish-brown paint.

De ahi, el lijado de esa pintura horrorosa.

Następnie usunięcie wszystkie ciemne farby

    

Voila!

     

And later, a layer of primer and of lacquer. We chose matte. It ages better. Glossy gets matte eventually. Matte is already matte. The picture below was taken right after they put it.. hence the glossiness.

Y después, una capa de base y barniz. Escogimos matte. Envejece mejor. El barniz brilloso se vuelve matte con el tiempo. El barniz matte, es matte. La foto debajo fue tomada inmediatamente después de ponerlo. Por eso se ve brilloso,

A później warstwy podkładu i lakieru. Wybraliśmy matowy. Wieku lepiej. Błyszczący dostaje w końcu matowy. Matowy już jest matowa. Poniżej zdjęcie zostało zrobione prawo po wsadzili go... stąd połysku.

    

Final result! After the final layer of lacquer. I recommend painting the walls before the final layer. Why? Well, before the final layer, they must go over with a machine and this will also clean any paint spills. But of course, you must cover the floors before painting, not with plastic, but with some kind of carton. The floor still needs to breathe.

Resultado final! Después de la capa final de barniz. Les recomiendo pintar las paredes antes de la ultima capa. Por que? Bueno, antes de poner la ultima capa, tienen que pasar una maquina encima de todo, y esta limpiara cualquier salpicón de pintura. Obvio que al momento de pintar hay que cubrir el piso para protegerlo, pero no con plastico, si no con algún tipo de cartón para que el piso pueda respirar.

Wynik końcowy! Po ostatecznej warstwy lakieru. Polecam, malowanie ścian przed ostatnia warstwa. Dlaczego? Cóż przed ostatnia warstwa musi przejść z maszyny i to również oczyścić wszelkie wycieki farby. Ale oczywiście, musisz pokryć podłogi przed malowaniem, nie z plastiku, ale z jakiegoś kartonu. Podłoga musi jeszcze oddychać.

Our Apartment Renovation Continues

WARNING: Quite a long post. To compensate my almost-a-month absence.

 

Here we are, 3 months after we started our renovation. And we thought it would take a month. Well, I think It would have been half a month faster if we would have had a team working on everything. But instead we hace a GREAT small man doing everything by himself.. and well, us doing whatever we can also :) It feels nice to put a bit of our effort on making our home (and feels better so save some money hahaha).

Here’s the kitchen progress. As you might remember, the kitchen wall was destroyed, the window was changed for a bigger one, and all the water pipes and electric cables were renewed.

Aquí estamos, 3 meses desde que empezamos la remodelación. Y nosotros pensamos que sólo iba a tomar un mes! Bueno, creo que serian 2 meses si hubiesemos tenido un equipo trabajando en todo. Pero tenemos sólo a un GRAN pequeño señor que hace todo solo.. y nosotros tambien ayudamos a veces :) se siente bien poner de nuestra parte en hacer nuestro hogar (y se siente mejor ahorrar plata jajaja)

Acá esta el progreso de la cosina. Como podrán recordar, la pared fue destruida, la ventana se cambió por una más grande, y las tuberias y cableado fue renovado.

Tu jesteśmy, trzy miesiące, od kiedy zaczęliśmy remont. A my myśleliśmy, że to jedynie miesiąc! Ale myślę, że to przez dwa miesiące, jeśli mieliśmy zespół nad tym. Ale mamy tylko WIELKI mały człowiek, który robi wszystko sam .. i pomagamy również czasami :) czuje się dobrze wykonać naszą część, aby uczynić nasz dom (i zaoszczędzić pieniądze czuje się lepiej hahaha)

Oto postęp kuchni. Jak pamiętacie, mur został zniszczony, okno było zmienić na większe, a rury i okablowanie zostało odnowione.

 

This was taken a two day ago. The light bulbs have been installed, but not completely, we still have to paint and don’t want to ruin the hardware.

Esta foto es de hace un par de dias, las luces ya estan instaladas (no completamente porque todavía necesitamos pintar).

To zdjęcie jest od kilku dni, światła są już zainstalowane (nie całkowicie, ponieważ wciąż musimy malować).

I’ll show the bathroom once its done! The lights are also installed, but that’s a surprise! I love how it looks NOW! And its not finished yet! Hopefully, by the end of the week all the floor and wall tiles will be put.

Les enseñaré el baño cuando esté terminado! Las luces están instaladas, pero eso es sorpresa! Me encanta cómo se ve AHORA! Y eso que no está terminado! Ojalá que al final de esta semana las mayólicas estén instaladas.

Pokażę wam łazienkę kiedy będzie gotowy! Światła są zainstalowane, ale to niespodzianka! Uwielbiam, jak wygląda TERAZ! A to nie jest skończony! Mam nadzieje że na koniec tego tygodnia płytki są zainstalowane.

 

 

This was our corridor before, and below is a photo of how it looks now. Still needs some stuff to be done.

The office / baby room is ready to be painted. We’re just waiting for the people renovating the floors to finish.

La oficina – cuarto de bebe esta lista para pintar. Sólo estamos esperando a que la gente que renueva el piso termine.

Biuro / pokój dziecko jest gotowy do malowania. Tylko czekamy na ludzi, renowację podłogi, aby zakończyć.

 

 

 

The bedroom is a mess. As you see, we’ve moved everything in there because they’re renovating the other floors. We’re going to have carpet on that room. It will make it cozier for us.

Nuestro cuarto es un desastre. Como pueden ver, hemos puesto todo ahí porque están renovando el piso en las otras habitaciones. Vamos a poner alfombra ahí. Para hacerlo mas acojedor.

Sypialnia jest bałagan. Jak widzicie, mamy przeniesiony wszystko w tam, ponieważ jest cyklinowania na inne pokoje. Będziemy mieć dywan na tym pokoju. Będzie miłej dla nas.

 

 

The living room is almost done. The only things we need to do (besides painting and decoration) are: finish THE WALL. And the guys still have to finish the floor.

La sala está casi lista. Lo único que necesitamos hacer (a parte de pintar y decorar) es: terminar LA PARED. Y bueno, a que terminen el piso.

W salonie jest prawie gotowy. Jedyne rzeczy, które musimy zrobić (oprócz malowania i dekoracji), są: zakończyć ŚCIANA. I chłopaki muszą jeszcze dokończyć podłogę.

Cuando el piso esté terminado voy a hacer un ANTES Y DESPUES post. También, cuando termine la pared, les enseñaré como la hicimos.

What to do with an Old door

We need to make many adjustments in the apartment we just bought. One of them is removing the kitchen door :( I L-O-V-E that old door.. but unfortunately its too big and is giving us some problems designing the kitchen cabinets.

Here's the problem:

The red lines is the actual door. The grey shade is where the kitchen cabinets would go. So, as you see, with the cabinets it would be impossible to open the door. Our solution is to make a sliding door towards the foyer/corridor.

Also, my idea was to put a mirror on the door, as it would be open almost always and we need a mirror in the entrance area (that rectangle next to the blue “future door” line is a table).

Necesitamos hacer algunos cambios en el depa que acabamos de comprar. Uno de ellos es quitar la puerta de la cocina :( A-M-O esa puerta! Pero desafortunadamente es muy grande y nos está dando problemas en el diseño de los reposteros de la cocina.

Este es el problema:

Las lineas rojas son la puerta, ahorita. Lo sombreado, girs, son los reposteros. Y, como ves, no se podría abrir la puerta. Nuestra solución es hacer una puerta corrediza que vaya hacia el hall.

También, la idea es poner en ella un espejo, ya que la puerta va a estar abierta casi todo el tiempo y necesitamos un espejo en la area de entrada (ese rectángulo al lado de la linea azul de la futura puerta es una consola/mesa).

Musimy zmienac duzo w mieszkaniu ze kupiliszmy. Jednym z nich jest usunięcie drzwi do kuchni :( KO-C-H-A-M to stare drzwi .. Ale niestety jest zbyt duży i daje nam problemy projektowania szafek kuchennych.

Oto problem:

Czerwone linie to stary drzwi.Szary odcień jest, gdy szafki kuchenne pójdzie. Więc, jak widzisz, z szaf byłoby niemożliwe aby otworzyć drzwi. Nasze rozwiązanie jest miec drzwi przesuwne w kierunku holu/korytarza.

Również mój pomysł było miec lustra na drzwiach bo ona bedzie otwarta prawie zawsze i musimy miec lustro przy wejściu (prostokąt obok niebieskiego "drzwi przyszłości" linii jest consola/stolik).

This is the door. And we’re not sure if it’s possible to put a big mirror on it, so probably we will buy a new door and don’t know what to to with this beautiful old one!

Esta es la puerta. Y no estamos seguros de qué se pueda poner un espejo grande en ella, así que probablemente compraremos una puerta nueva y no sabemos que hacer con la vieja!

To drzwi. I nie jesteśmy pewni, czy jest możliwe postawić duże lustro na nim, więc prawdopodobnie będziemy kupować nowe drzwi i nie wiem co się z tym pięknym jeden stary!

Oto kilka możliwych zastosowań dla niej .. Który z nich jest Twoim ulubionym?

 

Of course it would be renovated (remove all those layers of old paint).

My bedroom

As promised… here’s my bedroom. When I first came to Poland, like on 2007, I didn’t really care about how this room looked like. But 2 years ago, when I moved in.. I cared. And I had to change the awful color he had, re-arrange all the stuff he had (and he had A LOT.. plants, multicolor lamps he never used, an elliptical, boxes and way too much stuff just laying around in the room in a corner behind the tv or couch.. now I don’t remember exactly. So here we go… a tour through the process :)

Hope you enjoy! The color scheme I chose was dark grey, dark brown (in the furniture) and an off-white.

 

Unfortunately, this is the only pic I could find of the before. He sent me this when he bought his new bed. I was still in Peru. I have a few more pics, but there where taking during the process. I kind of regret it. because it would’ve been nice to see the exact before.. in every angle :P

BEFORE

See the stuff he had befind the tv? He had much more.

That was the original color of the cupboard. Light brown… like the desk and door.

Hubby and I have a big room, so working with dark colors was possible for us. The palette of colors I chose was dark grey, brown (in the furniture), silver and an off-white.

As you’ve noticed, we have a sloped ceiling, so the dark color went on the tallest wall to emphasize the height, and off-white on the slope to give the illusion of a higher ceiling. On the dark wall I added small frames instead of a big one.. it was kind of impossible with it’s shape. We had that mirror before… so we just kept it. Making that round white frame was hard!

AFTER

Our budget was a bit low, so we didn’t really buy new furniture. We don’t own the place where we live at, so we don’t really want to invest in new furniture.. we will do it once we buy a place. So, our desk stayed the same. But our shelves and cupboard where painted. It turned out black. But was supposed to be a dark brown tone like the bedframe and nightstands.

Unfortunately we have that blue rug and couch. But as I said before, we won’t take this with us once we move out. We’ll probably buy a new set for our future living room. The only new thing we bought where the nightstands and the dresser next to the tv.

 

That’s the dresser and the cupboard we painted. We changed the old handles by new steel-like ones. Also added wax-paper to the 2 small windows to give the impression of sanded-glass. I think it was a great idea, it not only hides the mess behind them, but also looked good when we bought our dresser.

See the alien head on at the top? That’s one of the things I didn’t get my hubby to get rid of!

Finally, a tip I used in our room. One of our cats likes to come back home through our windows. So, we painted the bottom part dark gray as our bedhead wall. You don’t see the footprints that much.
